Nanaimo-born singer-songwriter Allison
Crowe released a new album in the midst of a U.S. and European
tour.
When Allison Crowe sat down to record a new album, she found most of the work was done.
“I came to it and I realized I had a lot of songs recorded,” Crowe said. “I record when I write, so that’s how it happened.”
The album, Little Light, is a showcase for Crowe’s powerful voice. Most of the tracks feature accompaniment by a lone guitar or piano, with the occasional backing vocal. Some tracks were captured live.
Like previous albums, Crowe reprises some past hits from other artists. Little Light features Crowe’s interpretation of the Cyndi Lauper hit Time After Time, as well as Running for Home, written by fellow Canuck Matthew Good.
“I was in a bunch of different points,” Crowe said. “It’s sort of a mix of everything.”
Crowe is always writing and recording music in all places – her apartment in Corner Brook, Nfld., or her parents’ home in Nanaimo.
“I forget a lot of it, which is why I record it,” Crowe said.
She’s currently touring in the U.S. and will head to Europe in the fall. Europe will see Crowe more frequently in the future.
“The rest of this year is filled up with touring,” Crowe said.
Crowe grew up in Nanaimo before relocating to Newfoundland a few years ago. Touring means she spends little time in either home and lives much of her life all over the world.
“I kind of live everywhere,” Crowe said.
