Allison Crowe in Concert for "A Brush of Hope" - Friday, Sept. 7 @ The Button Factory (Waterloo Community Arts Centre)

On Friday, September 7, at 8 p.m., Allison Crowe performs in concert at The Button Factory, AKA the Waterloo Community Arts Centre (WCAC), 25 Regina St. S., Waterloo. This event is in support of the The Kidney Foundation of Canada's "A Brush of Hope" campaign.

"Get a piece of paper and write Tori Amos in the top left hand corner. Then write Patti Smith top right, followed by Stevie Nicks and Leonard Cohen (stay with me) in the bottom two positions. Then draw diagonal lines from their names to the centre, forming a big symmetrical cross. Here is where you will find Allison Crowe's music," says Australia's culture site, The Scene. The acclaimed vocalist and pianist from Canada fearlessly fits original songs alongside Pearl Jam, Ani DiFranco, The Beatles, Rock, Jazz, Broadway and more. It's a joyous sound that one music critic describes as 'Elton John meets Edith Piaf'. Says JoniMitchell.com song curator, Bob Muller: "Treat yourself to one of the mightiest talents on the singer-songwriter scene today."

In a stroke of inspiration, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, through its Kitchener, Ontario chapter, has come up with a colourful and creative way to raise awareness and funds for kidney research.

Allison Crowe is among the artists and broad palette of celebrities to participate in "A Brush of Hope" - painting a small canvas that will be exhibited and auctioned off later this year. Alex Lifeson, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Rick Mercer, Susan Aglukark, Daniel Lanois, Liona Boyd, Hawksley Workman, Ronnie Hawkins, Monika Schnarre, Sheila Copps, Rt. Hon. Kim Campbell, Crowe and others have picked up a paint-brush to help bring attention to the crisis surrounding kidney disease and kidney-related illness, not only in Canada, but around the globe. In 2006, the campaign’s inaugural year, 102 paintings were available for auction on eBay, raising over $16,000 for kidney research.

In keeping with the theme and the cause, at WCAC on Friday, September 7th, starting at noon, there'll be a number of people from different fields, painting - with their works to be donated to the Kidney Foundation's auction which happens later in the Fall. Included on this day will be: David Hobson (The Record's Gardening columnist); Brent Hanson (CTV News anchor); Susan Cook-Scheerer (host of Daytime, cable tv); Denise Baker (jazz vocalist with the Denise Baker Group); Brian Vollmer (Helix frontman); and Ken Seiling (Chair of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo).

Come the evening, performing arts will take centre stage. A true grassroots independent, Canadian musician Allison Crowe unites genres and generations. Since launching an independent record label in 2003, she has released five albums - each of which has been a critical and commercial success. Her newest album, 'This Little Bird', has landed on top-ten lists from the USA to Sweden. It’s currently a hit on radio in Scotland where she travels next month to be part of the “John Lennon Northern Lights Festival”.

"Allison has a special gift that is so very rare in musicians today. She is true to her mind, heart and spirit. She also has a most wonderful humor which envelops her audience," says Ross Hocker, long-time public broadcaster with NPR affiliate WGTE. Hocker, whose taste embraces Thelonious Monk, Bela Bartok and Charles Gounod, calls a recent performance by Allison Crowe "the most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life."

Advance tickets are $18 general/$12 students and seniors @: WCAC Box Office (25 Regina St. S.); Twelfth Night Music Shoppe (33 Erb St. W.) in Waterloo; The Kidney Foundation (569 Lancaster St. W., Unit A) & Encore Records (54 Queen St. S.) in Kitchener.
