Allison Crowe in Concert ~ with Special Guest Trois Femmes - Friday, Sept. 14 @ 8 p.m.  ~ Corner Brook Arts & Culture Centre Lobby

When, a couple of Winters back, musician Allison Crowe declared she was flying east to Newfoundland some people did wonder if her navigational equipment was out of order.

Born on Vancouver Island, in the same town, Nanaimo, and on the same date, November 16, as jazz superstar Diana Krall, (though genres and generations apart), Crowe was steadily earning a reputation as one of the most exciting new vocalists and pianists in the rock world. When she decided to leave her British Columbia nest, it might have been anticipated she’d move to a big music centre, say, New York City - where she’d already commenced album sessions and was being courted by record industry heavyweights.

The acclaimed artist, though, followed her heart to Corner Brook - where, under the pale-salmon stage lights of Gitanos’ dinner-club, she’d been charmed by a local lad on an earlier tour-stop. And, making her move, Crowe did what any good songwriter would do - she wrote a song about it. “This Little Bird” who flies “to a Corner in the East” became the title track of Crowe’s next, and newest, album. (You can hear & download the song )

Her career continues to soar from her home on the rock. “This Little Bird”, recorded on both of Canada’s coasts, with help from some of the brightest talents in both of her home territories, has alighted on top-ten lists from the USA to Sweden. It’s currently a hit on radio in Scotland where she travels next month to be part of the “John Lennon Northern Lights Festival”.

"Get a piece of paper and write Tori Amos in the top left hand corner. Then write Patti Smith top right, followed by Stevie Nicks and Leonard Cohen (stay with me) in the bottom two positions. Then draw diagonal lines from their names to the centre, forming a big symmetrical cross. Here is where you will find Allison Crowe's music," says Australia's culture site, The Scene. It's a joyous sound that one music critic describes as 'Elton John meets Edith Piaf'. Says JoniMitchell.com song curator, Bob Muller: "Treat yourself to one of the mightiest talents on the singer-songwriter scene today."

Folks on island have opportunity to catch Crowe, with special guests, next month, at a cabaret-styled concert in the Corner Brook Arts & Culture Centre Lobby - on Friday, September 14. The show begins at 8 p.m. with a set from Trois Femmes - three talented women, one a native to the Corner Brook area and two from neighbouring Nova Scotia, who love music and have varied backgrounds in performing. Through a series of very fortunate events, Peggy Perry, Meegan Lovett, and Mary Chisholm joined together to form a trio in September 2006. Experimenting with a variety of music from classical to Atlantic folk, the girls settled comfortably on a sound featuring contemporary and jazz songs. Each musicienne draws from her collection of favorites for Trois Femmes’ repertoire. Showcasing and blending together the sounds of piano, cello and voice - it’s a balm of the familiar and the not-so-familiar for the listening ear.

Aprés Trois Femmes, “This Little Bird” will take her seat at the A&C Centre’s grand piano. "Allison has a special gift that is so very rare in musicians today. She is true to her mind, heart and spirit. She also has a most wonderful humor which envelops her audience," says Ross Hocker, long-time public broadcaster with NPR affiliate WGTE. Hocker, whose taste embraces Thelonious Monk, Bela Bartok and Charles Gounod, calls a recent performance by Allison Crowe "the most honest, heartfelt, and directly intimate concert in my entire life."
